V is for victory -- victory over hatred.
That's the message Bartram Trail High School officials hope to send with a memorial, constructed with a 6-foot beam of the World Trade Center shaped into a V.
Bartram Trail Principal Tim Forson said he hopes the memorial will be "a symbol for the students now and in the years to come of the values of citizenship and unity."
Graduate Mark Minor headed efforts to acquire the beam and make a memorial. He said the theme, which will be displayed near the statue, was derived from a statement President Bush made after the attacks:
"These acts can shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve."
In May, then-Principal Jim Springfield and two other men traveled to ground zero to pick up the beam, one of 73 pieces of the towers acquired by non-profit or memorial groups.
Bartram Trail art director Bob Kirk designed and sculpted the memorial. The twisted, rusted World Trade Center beam was joined with a shiny piece of stainless steel atop a pedestal.
"The World Trade Center beam represents the reality of the tragedy and what took place," Kirk said. "The second half represents strength in rebuilding."
While visiting this memorial we soon realized that this tragedy affected young and old alike. The work done on this monument, by the students, administrators and all other personnel, was done with a determination to prove that Americans were strong and would come back from this horrible tragedy.
The moments we viewed this 9/11 reminder were so poignant that it is truly too difficult to put words to paper to describe the feelings. This is one waymark that we will never forget.
