Charles Henry Smith was a southern writer who drew world wide acclaim for his humorous writings about the serious subjects surrounding the secession of the South from the Union. His early writings were in the dialect of a poor southern farmer in the midst of the tumult that was the Civil War.

His humor of coarse reflected the emotions of the time for those living through those years. He served in the Confederate Army in several capacities and was a contributor for many years to the Atlanta Newspapers and was published in newspapers all over the United States as far away as San Francisco.

One example of his wit was in an article he published regarding politicians promises that except for the particulars sounds like much of what we hear today..

"We are going to give protection to the manufacturers and free trade to the consumers. We are going to buy the farmers' corn at a dollar a bushel, and sell it to the poor for twenty-five cents. We are going to issue ten thousand millions of greenbacks so that everybody can have a hat full, and then we will build railroads to every town and open all the creeks and macadamize all the roads, and give all soldiers and widows and orphans pensions, and have a general jubilee all over the country." Sound familiar???

On he and his wife's 50th wedding anniversary he received a gift from Joel Chandler Harris with the inscription "To Bill Arp from Uncle Remus."

Another interesting bit about this particular grave is that one of his grandchildren died on the day of his funeral and was buried in the same grave that day.
