Jeremiah Stewart moved to Mendon from Dutchess County in 1833 and was one of the first settlers in Mendon. In 1834, it is believed that Stewart, a mason, built his home. This house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it states the builder is unknown. Stewart Canfield, a decendent of Stewart sold the several hundred acre farm to Monroe County in 1928 to create Mendon Ponds Park. The house was used as a residence for several Park superintendents. Major repairs were completed in 2004 to repair sections of the cobblestone wall in the rear of the house that sustained water damage.
A description of the house from Cobblestone Quest:
The limestone quions are probably Onondaga limestone hauled by oxcart from a Scottsville quarry. The field cobblestones are "hardheads" gathered from surrounding hills. The mortar is more graval than usual, which has led to significant weathering.
This house is framed with oak and tamarack from the surrounding forests. Inside is a massive fireplace, exposed framing timbers and heand-hewn stair rail.
