Canton, Georgia was named for Canton China in about 1832. The reason for the unusual link is even more interesting than the fact that the two are linked at all. The early settlers of Canton, Georgia in Cherokee County thought they could start a silk making operation and so they named the city after the premier silk producing city in the world at that time. Canton China.
The silk making operation never came to fruition but the name stuck.
A very interesting point in history.
