Next to the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail, Manteca's Tidewater Bikeway is one of California's most successful Rails to Trails projects. Manteca would not exist without the railroad, in fact, it was a misprinted railroad ticket that gave the city its prosaic name (Manteca = Spanish for lard, ckick here for the full story.)
A railway reconstruction project in the 1990s left the old Tidewater Railway corridor abandoned and provided the City with a great recreational opportunity. Thus, the railway corridor was turned into the Tidewater Bikeway, a paved path, evenly used by bikers, hikers and skaters and leading three and a half mile from the northern to the southern City limits. While the trail is only ten feet wide, the corridor measures up to one hundred feet in width in some places, turning the entire trail into something like a linear park. It also connects a number of Manteca's inner city parks. The coordinates are taken near Yosemite Avenue in downtown Manteca, where the trail touches Wilson Park. The bikeway is still an ongoing project and as the city grows - so will the trail.
