The house was built 1878 in by Charles W. Heywood, the son of Zimri Brewer Heywood. Zimri Heywood had a large family, and several of his descendants became distinguished and prominent Berkeley citizens. At various times, one son and two grandsons of his were mayors of Berkeley. Others served on the School Board and Volunteer Fire Department.

For years the house stood deteriorating, and in the late 1990s was bought and lovingly refurbished. Palms and other emphatic plants loved by Victorians were planted in the front yard.

The Charles W. Heywood house was designated City of Berkeley Landmark in 1979. It is listed in the California State Historic Resources Inventory.
