Before radio, before television, there was live entertainment, and this is where folks in much of Franklin County and beyond came to enjoy traveling troupes presenting music, drama and comedy.
Constructed in 1892 at a cost of $10,000, a gift to the community by Dr. B. J. Kendall (very wealthy from manufacturing horse liniment just around the corner). Until the early 1950s, the Opera House featured traveling and local entertainment, hosted meetings, and served as the home for prominent school events. The stage is intimate and the acoustics match any of the great music halls.
A restoration movement began in the early Seventies, and over time has seen the building repaired and upgraded, including an elevator to make the auditorium accessible to the handicapped.
Today, among other things, the Opera House hosts performances by the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and is the home venue for the local amateur theatre group.
