This is the only known statue of a very important Confederate general in the Civil War. General Johnston, in charge of the Army of the Tennessee, lead the 79 day campaign in Georgia to try to defend North Georgia and Atlanta from the attacks of Union General Sherman.
General Johnston died in 1891 after catching a cold as he served as a pall bearer at the funeral of General William Tecumseh Sherman, his rival in the actions in North Georgia.
The actions he was involved in during the campaign are well documented on this website in the category Georgia Historical Markers.
