Georgia was first settled in 1733 by English settlers who first landed in Charleston, then made their way down the coast to settle in Savannah. The province was named Georgia in honor of King George II of England. In 1996, Atlanta was chosen to host the summer Olympic games, and these signs were erected in commemoration.
The state song, "Georgia On My Mind" by Hoagy Carmichael, was originally written about a woman of that name, but after Georgia native Ray Charles sang it, the state legislature voted it the state song on 24 April 1979. Ray Charles sang it on the legislative floor when the bill was passed. The slogan, "We're glad Georgia's on your mind" appeared on Georgia license plates beginning in 1997, echoing the state song and slogan.
CAUTION:This sign is along a very busy Interstate with traffic traveling at 70 MPH. Keep you hands on the wheel and please have a passenger take any pictures!
