The Alaskan Hotel is the oldest operating hotel in Alaska, opening on Tuesday, September 16, 1913. When it front doors swung open, the keys were attached to a balloon and sent skyward, symbolizing that the doors would always be open to guests.
The hotel is an excellent architectural example of transitional change between 19th and 20th century.
