Corps of Discovery II – Fort Atkinson #2 is a four-inch survey disk on the grounds of the Fort Atkinson State Park, Fort Calhoun, Washington County, Nebraska. The disk is stamped with the logo of the Corps of Discovery II series of Lewis and Clark commemorative disks, but is not in the National Geodetic Survey’s list of sponsored commemorative activities. The disk does not have any other identifying stamping other than the standard design elements of the commemorative series of disks: CORPS OF DISCOVERY II – 200 YEARS TO THE FUTURE – PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP. The disk is set in a round concrete monument that is flush with the surface in a large, grassy field east-southeast of the park’s visitors’ center. It is about 45 feet south of the centerline of the “Grass Trail” that leads from the visitors’ center to the restored old fort. To reach from the Washington County Historical Museum on 14th Street (US Route 75) in Fort Calhoun, go south for one block to Madison Street. Turn left and go east on Madison Street for about 0.47 miles to the T-intersection with 7th Street. Turn left and go north on 7th Street for about 0.1 miles to the entrance to the Fort Atkinson State Historical Park. Follow the driveway east and north to the parking lot on the northwest side of the visitors' center, and walk about 200 feet southeast to the center. Leave the visitors' center by the southeast door and walk east-southeast on "Grass Trail" for about 0.13 miles to a mowed path on the right leading south for about 45 feet to the disk. Park employees provided the information and assistance to make this visit/recovery possible. Information is as of 07/12/2005. Recovery first logged at the Geocaching datasheet for station Q234, PID = MK0536.
