Only ten years after the California Gold Rush, in 1860, copper was dicovered in Calaveras County. By 1868, more than 2,000 people lived here in what had become California's primary copper producing area. The marker is next to the Copperopolis Post Office where some old copper mining equipment is on display.

Text on the marker:
Named after Major John Ebbett and pointed out in 1853 to syrveyor W. K. Reed and Thomas McCarty discovered copper here in 1860. The mines were utilized during the Civil War, when they were the principal copper producing section of the United States, and World Wars I and II.
