The caboose (ATSF 999789) and the adjacent 10.8 acre prairie land were donated by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in 1998. On Leon Cook Road adjacent to the Des Plaines River.

The caboose is well preserved and there are other rail-related items at the site. The prairie is high quality dry mesic and mesic gravel and is the largest of the two remnants of its type that survive in Illinois.
This site is the culmination of the efforts of volunteers Floyd Swink, Dr. Robert Betz, Ray Schulenberg, David Blenz, Stan Johnson, Greg Starr and Karen Stasky and others who founded the prairie conservation movement in Illinois. Part of the Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor and a designated Illinois Nature Preserve.
