Geology sign on crater rim trail.
Marker Name: La Pine Basin
Marker Text: The La Pine Basin was formed by Newberry lavas periodically damming the Deschutes River drainage system for more than the 500,000 years. The most recent damming of the Deschutes River was by the Lava Butte flow.
The basin was filled largely with lava and river sediments, which can be seen in the steep banks of the Deschutes River between Wickiup Reservoir and Sunriver. These sediments consist of silts, sands, and fine gravels and are over 1,300 feet thick at La Pine.
The basin is bounded on the east by Newberry Volcano and on the west by Cascade Range. Similar sediments are believed to exist under the Lookout Mountain area northward nearly to Mt. Bachelor.
