This station was originally housed in the nearby mission-style building, and many older (40+ year old) locals remember catching trains from this structure. The building was eventually taken over by a rather elegant Chinese restaurant called China Station, and the station was relegated to the uninviting landing beneath the underpass. When you went by in the train you barely even knew it was a station! In recent years, with the rise in importance of the 4th Street shopping area, the entire area was cleaned up, and the waiting area under the underpass was upgraded. Attractively lettered station logos, a bus waiting area, seats, maps, and decorative paving were added. The station is still unmanned, and two frequently broken ticket dispensers are where one buys tickets. The restaurant changed hands and for awhile became Xanadu. Now it looks as if that endeavor has failed, too.
