Plum Creek became the county seat of Dawson County when the county was organized in 1871 and the first courthouse was built in 1874. In 1889 the name of the town was changed to Lexington and in 1913 construction began on this stone courthouse.
The courthouse occupies a square on the north edge of downtown Lexington. William F. Gernandt, the architect, designed several other Nebraska Courthouses.
