NC VA GRANITE MONUMENT NO 31 is located at N36 32 40.0, W078 13 21.7, plus/minus 15 feet. This is referenced in the NCGS data base, but nowhere else. I reached the monument by taking US-1 north. Just across the state line in Virginia, I picked up VA-713 (named Rough Road, but it is paved.) Then, I turned left on VA-842 (Flat Rock Rd.) and went about a quarter mile to a brick house on the right, where I got permission to enter the posted land.
I continued another quarter mile south to the state line, where I parked in a turn-out. I walked along the north edge of a field on the NC side of the line, and entered the woods, following a faint trail. After 500 feet of foot travel, I found an abandoned house with a 40-inch oak tree. I continued eastward another 300 feet and found the monument on the south side of a 8-inch oak which has a Witness Post sign.
