Joseph Finger, an Austrian immigrant, found one of his first jobs directing the Houston office of C.D. Hill and Company before partnering with James Ruskin Baily in 1914. This was one of two theaters designed by Finger while working for C.D. Hill, each one a combination of theater, retail and office space.
The adjacent McCrory’s five-and-dime eventually expanded into the retail space of the Isis Building. Since McCrory’s closing, the buildings once again have been separated. The Isis Theater now holds a handful of popular nightclubs, some of which incorporate the theater’s original interior design.
