The USS Hoel, USS Johnston, and USS Samuel B. Roberts monument is a large granite memorial dedicated in 1995 to the men who died on those ships in the October 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf (Philippines). The memorial is located in the east center section of the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, California.

USS Hoel (DD-533) was a World War II-era Fletcher-class destroyer in the service of the United States Navy, named after Lieutenant Commander William R. Hoel. At the Battle of Samar the Hoel was under the command of Commander Leon S. Kintberger. The USS Hoel was sunk by enemy gunfire in the Battle off Samar on 25 October, 1944. Only 86 of Hoel's complement survived while 253 officers and men died with their ship.

USS Johnston (DD-557) was a World War II-era Fletcher-class destroyer in the service of the United States Navy. She was the first Navy ship named after Lieutenant John V. Johnston. USS Johnson was Commissioned 27 October 1943, Lieutenant Commander Ernest E. Evans in command. The USS Johnson was sunk by enemy gunfire in the Battle off Samar on 25 October, 1944. From Johnston's complement of 327, only 141 were saved. Of 186 lost, about 50 were killed by enemy action, 45 died on rafts from battle injuries; and 92, including Cmdr. Evans, got off the Johnston before she sank, but were never heard from again. Lt. Cmdr. Ernest E. Evans was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor:

USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) was a John C. Butler-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy, named after Coxswain Samuel Booker Roberts, Jr., a Navy Cross recipient. The Samuel B. Roberts was commissioned on 28 April 1944 with Lieutenant Commander Robert W. Copeland, USNR, in command. In the battle off Samar on 25 October 1944 the USS Samuel B. Roberts was hit by a salvo of 14 inch (356 mm) shells which tore a hole 40 feet (12 m) long and 10 feet (3 m) wide in the port side of her No. 2 engine room. The ship was abandoned and soon sank. The 120 survivors clung to 3 life rafts for 50 hours before being rescued.
