In 1885 the Cochise House Hotel occupied this location. A guest, Mary Gee, planted the rose bush in the hotel patio. The bush, of the Lady Banksia variety, had been sent to Mrs. Gee from relatives in Scotland; some say it was a wedding gift. In the 1920s new owners of what had become the Arcade Hotel and Annex built the steel pipe and wooden post trellis that supports the rose tree. In 1938 the Arcade was renamed The Rose Tree Inn which remained a popular boarding house until it closed in 1953. In 1954 the hotel was incorporated into the Rose Tree Museum which remains today. The bush/tree now covers >8,000 square feet. It is surmised that its tap root reaches the water filled mines underneath the town.
Many off-shoots of this tree have been transplanted around town (including on our property) and probably around the world. Tombstone has an annual festival and parade in its honor in April, which is the best time to experience the glorious, exhilarating blooms.
