The following information about this time capsule is available on the internet (visit link): "The "Vault for the Future," 1956-2056, is an exemplar of the time capsule as a large content, significant-sealed Centennial-style at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Its 24 boxes of records are a lot of historical documentation for just a 100 year time capsule. This large collection of archival records is essentially indistinguishable from various mundane special collections of the sort often sequestered in various libraries and organization's storage until those records are needed for reference or historical research. The Vault's boxes were sealed in a special, buried container for a 100-year period with special ceremony."

"The occasion of its sealing marked the dedication of its host building. In this narrower technical sense, its boxes of historical contributions are more of a special or artificial collection. They were donated by organizations such as the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. National Council for Aeronautics (precursor of NASA, the U.S. space agency), the U.S. National Bureau of Standards, the American Institute of Electrical Engineering, the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. The June 20, 1956, lowering of the "Vault" vessel into its deposit space dedicated the Tompkins Hall engineering building at George Washington University."
