"One flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" has a simple premise: career criminal McMurphy wants to serve out the remainder of his sentence outside of the normal jail, in what he perceives as the relative luxury of the psychiatric ward. However, once inside, he finds not only has he traded one harsh set of conditions for another, but that he no longer has a guaranteed release date. The movie then moves into a series of scenes and incidents that illustrate the characters more than drive a plot. The ending is as much a divergence from the remainder of the movie as it is a shock to the viewer, but that only serves to illustrate both the fact that the journey can take many forms as much as how brilliant a film this is. This film swept the five major Oscars, including Best Picture, one of only three films in history to do so.
