Sarnath, north of Varanasi (Benares) in the province of Uttar Pradesh, is the place where the Buddha gave his first sermon after becoming enlightened. It is one of the four major pilgrimage sites commemorating events in the Buddha's life.
Sarnath from the word Saranganath which means "Lord of the Deer" was originally the site of a deer park, a remnant of which remains to the north of the site. Also on the site are ruins of monasteries and buildings established by the Indian Buddhist ruler Ashok. A giant stupa commemorates the location of the sermon, and it is typical to see monks and pligrims circumambulating the stupa. Nearby, an archaeologic museum houses relics from the site. A number of temples of various religious orders are also located in the area.
