This cathedral seems small by European standards and is dwarfed by the nearby financial district buildings, but built in 1854, it was San Francisco's first cathedral. Architects William Craine and Thomas England designed the building in a gothic-revival style. It was the first home of the Catholic Archdiocese in San Francisco. In 1891, this was moved to a larger building on Van Ness Street. The building survived the 1906 earthquake only to be gutted by the subsequent fire that raged through town. Ironically (as of May 2008), the cathedral is fundraising to complete seismic upgrades. They welcome any donations to save this historic structure.
