Alice Waters, owner of Chez Panise, and a neighbor of the school, discovered to her horror that for children at the local Jr. High School the only lunchtime alternatives were junk food. In 1995, a group of educators, chefs, and landscape architects collaborated to create this garden at King Jr. High school. The garden site was the former location of temporary classroom buildings and had stood vacant for years.
As part of the educational program, children grow their own food crops and flowers and prepare meals with their harvest. Almost inadvertently, they learn about biology, ecology and nutrition.
The garden is open to the public after school hours. During school, arrangements should be made with school officials.
