The scenic Monocacy River Valley Viewpoint is dedicated to Congressman Goodloe Edgar Byron (1929-1978), a native of Williamsport, Maryland. Congressman Byron was responsible for legislation that created the Monocacy Battlefield National Park, visible to the north of the viewpoint. The Battle of Monocacy (also known as Monocacy Junction) took place on July 9, 1864. It pitted the North against the South, and Washington, D.C. was the prize. The South eventually pushed through the Northern lines but the North had delayed the South by one day so reinforcements could arrive. Thus the Battle of Monocacy saved Washington, D.C.
