The parish of St. Xavier dates to 1819. The parish has been a Jesuit parish since 1840. The current church building, replacing an earlier church building on the same site, was built beginning in 1858 and completed in 1861. The Gothic Revival styled church was designed by Charles C Svendsen. The building had a major fire on April 7, 1882 which gutted the interior. The church was restored the same year. The church remains active serving a broad area within the parish boundaries. ~ paraphrased from church website
