A vertical marker in the crematorium at Pere Lachaise.
Although not as popular a figure as Jim Morrison who is also interred at Pere Lachaise, Ernst's marker sports a bit of graffiti from fans in the form of signatures.
Description:
German-born, Ernst was a painter and poet, and a major figure in the Surrealist and Dadaist Art movements. Over his long career, he collaborated with a wide array of artists, including Miro, Giacommetti, Breton, and Jean Arp.
Ernst served briefly in the German Army in WWI which affected him deeply. In 1920 he emigrated to Paris and worked with fellow dadaists.
In 1938, he was briefly imprisoned by the Germans, but managed to escape and emigrate to the U.S with the help of his patron, heiress Peggy Guggenheim. He married Peggy Guggenheim, but this marriage did not last. In 1946, he married fellow artist Dorthea Tanning. The couple moved to France in 1953, and he died in Paris in 1976.
A much more elaborate biography can be found at Wikipedia.
