The Second Christian Church was formed in 1872 by Rev. Burrell Basket. The congregation was smaller than the other two black churches (Second Baptist and St. Paul's A.M.E.), it also played a part in eh social and religious life of many Columbia blacks. The present church was built in 1927, much later than Columbia's other two African-American churches. ~ paraphrased from National Register Nomination Form

The church is now known as the Fifth Street Christian Church.
