The furnace was built in 1844 by Daniel Hillman in what used to be Hematite, Kentucky. The furnace was the largest in the area and conitnued operation until it closed in 1912. Most of labores working at this furnace were Chineese immigrants who were segregated from the other workers and people of the community.

The furnace is made of brick as opposed to limestone and is deterriorated, however the site looks as though little restoration has been attempted. The site is fenced off but very visible.
