Dr. James H. Thornley, was a charter member of the Camp Meeting Association, which founded Ocean Grove in 1869. He believed a structure should be dedicated to the services of the youth in the community.
Dr. Thornley passed on February 12, 1889, but at the May meeting of the Association that year, a Memorial Chapel to Dr. Thornley was appointed. A special building by Founder's Park was chosen and remodeled to a working chapel.
The Chapel is still in use today, for the Ocean Grove's Famous Children's Meetings held 9 AM daily for children up to 12 years old. And the Victorian charm of the Chapel has made it a popular spot for weddings as well.
