Here the old county boundary is marked on a very fine inscribed stone laid into the Lobby bridge. The river Winster used to be the old county boundary between Lancashire and Westmorland.

The words are carved in to smooth limestone spanning the centre of the bridge. The upstream wall has the parishes and old county wording, the downstream wall has the bridge name. The walls are made of limestone rubble with flat limestone coping stones. The wordings read "Cartmell Fell Lancashire Crosthwaite and Lyth Westmorland" and "C.C. Lobby Bridge".
Lancashire and Westmorland are two of the old counties, along with Cumberland, that formed the new county of Cumbria in 1974. Bridge maintenance was historically the county's responsibility, not the parish, who historically appointed a surveyor and two assistants to look after all county buildings and structures, including bridges. As this bridge spanned the boundary, legal arguments ensued with neighbouring Westmorland.
