The Neva River, only 46 miles long, is Russia's only outlet to the seaboard of western Europe. It has always been a strategic and important location. Wide and easily navigable it has been utilized as a water transport route for centuries.
In 1703 Peter the Great moved the capital of Russia to a new city built on the marshy islands of the Neva River delta. This became St Petersburg and today almost half the length of the Neva River is within the city and its suburbs.
Numerous drawbridges, which are opened on a regular nightly schedule, cross the river. In the city center the banks are lined with magnificent palaces and cathedrals from the days of the czars and also with long blocks of drab stalinistic office buildings. In the suburban regions high rise apartment buildings and impressive private homes, some of them in very modern style, stand along the river. Villages and several sizable towns are along the river between the city and Lake Ladoga. The Schlisslburg fortress stands on an island where the river leaves the lake.
The coordinates were taken at the cruise boat dock by the passenger terminal in the southeast part of the city.
