In 1889 Augustus C. Freeman arrived in Punta Gorda and opened a hardware store that also sold caskets. He served on the City Council, as mayor, as a county commissioner of DeSoto County from the Punta Gorda district, and as DeSoto County sheriff from 1905 to 1913, after which he moved to California.
Originally on Marion Avenue, the A.C. Freeman house was built in 1903, in the "Carpenter Queen Anne" style with a square tower on the northeast corner. In 1985, it was moved to Hargreaves Street and restored by the Medical Center Foundation, now the Charlotte County Foundation, and furnished authentically in the late Victorian era. In 1987 it was placed on the National Register. Moved to Retta Esplanade in 2005, it serves as offices for the Punta Gorda Historical Society and for the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce.
