The original was taken about 1900. The school was constructed in 1872. Originally it housed the high school classes for Lansing and the Lansing Public Library. The Carneige Library was built in 1903(the red building on the left in the now photo). The top two floors were then removed and the building enlarged for the 1912 school year. The building that began was in the center of the block, but then later expanded to take up most of the city block.
