The name of the village "Kirkby Ireleth" is Norse in origin and means "The village church by the West meeting place"
Kirkby is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086
The earliest parts of the church are of Norman origin, the doorway to the main entrance is a very well preserved Norman arch, the doorway is thought to date from about 1150.
The present church is believed to have been built by Roger de Kirkby, who's descendants were Lords of the manor of Kirkby for 600years.
The church remained unchanged for many years and at the time of Henry VIII.
It was furnished with "horse box" type pews that were still in existence until they were removed in 1884.
It is not known when the original tower was built but it fell down in 1657,when the bells were being rung for morning service, there were only 3 bells at that time and 2 were broken in the fall, nothing is recorded of what happened to the ringers!
There have been many alterations and improvements over the centuries, but the present church re opened on the 17th.October 1884 by the Rev.Harvey Goodwin, the then Bishop of Carlisle.
An interesting fact is that there are 2 oak chests in the church cut from solid blocks of wood and may have belonged to the Saxon church,as the rings on the wood show that the trees could have been growing in the area at the time of Christ.
