During the building of the Thai-Burma Railway across Thailand, thousands of POWs died under the harsh control of their Japanese captors. Those who died in the hospital at the camp near Chung Kai on the outskirts of Kanchanaburi Province were buried in a hastily dug cemetery. Graves were marked with wooden crosses. After the war it was decided to leave the graves undisturbed and keep the land as a war cemetery. Much smaller than the large Don Rak War Cemetery in the center of town, it is no less poignant in its simplicity and upkeep. No matter when you visit you will find the grass neatly cut, all graves neatly manicured, and the monument always clean. The hospital no longer stands nearby, but the 1,750 who died of disease or their injuries from the jungle work parties are remembered here.
