The small lighthouse was only used for 28 years. During that time, a lighthouse keeper lived nearby to light the kerosene lantern when necessary.
In 1926, when the big lighthouse was built, the glassed-in portion and the lantern were removed.
Originally, the big lighthouse had a hand-wound rotating reflector, a kerosene, and a foghorn. In 1961, it was automated with an electric beacon and the foghorn was no longer used.
The last full-time lightkeeper was Oli Grimolfson although Helgi Jones acted as part-time lightkeeper for 1962 to 1970. The lighthouse is now maintained by the Canadian Coast Guard.
