The historical marker text reads:
FIRST PHYSICIAN
Henry D. Palmer, M.D. (1809-1877) located at this site in 1836. First physician in Lake County he was also counselor to the pioneers for 40 years and member of the underground railroad aiding escaped slaves.
Womans Auxillary Lake County Medical Society
The marker is located just off of 73rd Avenue, which once was US Route 30, in a typical early 1970's subdivision - with the exception of ONE house on a small hill. Although not Dr. Palmer's house, the house is strikingly older and you see why he picked this site in 1836. At the time, it would have commanded a wonderful view of the prairie. The home is a private residence and not available for tours.
