I love these statues since they were first installed outside our brand new 21 million dollar library in 2004. They adorn the right side of the entrance to our awesome library! This statue has been the talk of the town for quite some time now.

On any given day, you can see scores of people having their pictures taken with these beauties, just as I did for this waymark photo. I spoke to the librarian and this is what I learned:

The statues cost us about $65,000 which was eventually raised through fund-raising program. The town did not want to lose the sculpture (which was on loan for two years) and wanted to make its presence permanent. The campaign to raise money was no small undertaking. Working with the Sculpture Foundation, the Friends of the Cherry Hill Library (our volunteer organization) negotiated a purchase price and payment terms.

The sculpture, "Sunday Morning", was cast in 1989 and has toured the United States and internationally as part of various traveling exhibitions. The work depicts a young couple reading on the grass and Johnson's signature details can be seen in fine print of the bronze newspaper and in vivid colors and textures of the work overall. The woman's shoes casually kicked off to the side and the man's relaxed pose beckon to the viewer, as if in invitation to sit and join this couple in a quiet weekend retreat. This is why I waymarked this; it is the perfect sit by me statue.

This is the website of the company which placed the statue. This is the website for our library
