This large wooden windmill was built in 1928, in the village of Volkostrov, by a local peasant, Nikolai Jakovlevich Bikanin (1880-1958) In 1961 it was moved to Kizhi Island and restored to become part of the Open Air Museum preserving and displaying the wooden architecture of northern Russia. It stands in the collection of buildings south of the large churches in the Kizhi Pogost.
The windmill is known as a "pillar" windmill because it's set on a pillar sunk deep in the ground. It could be rotated to catch the best wind direction. The two story housing structure is built from pine boards and the blades are made of birch. The windmill was used for grinding grain.
