The First Congregational and Presbyterian Church of Buffalo was established in February of 1812, and is the city's oldest religious body. With a membership of 25 people, they first met in the city court house. Over the next 79 years, they met in two other churches before moving into this current structure.

Prominent Buffalo architects Green & Wicks designed this church which was completed in 1891. The first services was on December 13 of that year. The 163' tower was completed in 1897 and the church was formally dedicated on May 6.

The church is located on Symphony Circle, part of the Delaware Park/Front Park System designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The tower of the church provides a nice complement to the twin towers of the Buffalo Psychiatric Center on the north end of Richmond Avenue.
