[EN] In Roman society, the forum represented the political, social and economic center of the city. Private meetings and commercial transactions were held there and tribute was paid to the gods, emperors, and nobles.
Also, such a place was richly endowed with numerous municipal facilities such as the curia (seat of the senate), civil basilica (where justice was dispensed), as well as the prestigious porticos and religious edifaces. A vast elevated esplanade reinforced the symbolic function of the ensemble.
The Arles forum was the first major urban project of the recently founded Roman colony, between 30-20 BC., and remodeled several times up until the end of the Empire, the period in which it began to be pillaged and disappeared.
Apart from the impressive cryptoportical, basement galleries built to compensate for the natural slope of the site, few vestiges of its former splendor remain today. The columns of the Forum Plaza are some of the most notable.
