The town of Stony Stratford has been visited by many fires over the centuries. One of the most damaging was the fire of 1742.
Tradition has it that a chambermaid at the local Bull Inn set the blaze by stuffing a sheet up the chimney. She didn't want to be dismissed after burning the sheet whilst ironing it.
The ensuing blaze destroyed the Bull Inn as well as the close-by Cock Hotel, and much of the eastern end of the town.
One other victim of the fire was the old church. All that remains is the bell tower. A total of 146 houses were destroyed, with an estimated damage of £22,000. The town was re-built but this church was not.
