During the late 1700s and early 1800s, south Jersey had booming industries, thanks in part to the ores found in the swampy bogs. Bog iron was used to produce cannons, and cannonballs, as well as other military and civilian needs. Towns sprung up around dammed streams, such as Smithville.
By the late 1800s, early 1900s, with a better grade of iron found in Pennsylvania crushed the south Jersye economy. Many towns, such as Smithville, became abandoned ghost towns.
Smithville has been, and is still, undergoing a restoration. Visitors can come observe life as it was then.
