A well-dressed man has been seen on the Interstate Bridge pedestrian walkway on dark, misty nights, heading toward Hayden Island and then vanishing. Perhaps it is the specter of Grove Reed Percival (b. 1860), the former mayor of Vancouver, Washington, who walked out onto the single span (now northbound) Interstate Bridge on election night, October 17, 1920, and disappeared. An extensive search was conducted, but it was November 22 before his body was found on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, about 100 yards from the railroad bridge in a clump of trees. He had hung himself from a tree limb. There was no apparent reason for the suicide. He was a “hard worker for the advancement of Vancouver and stood out as one of its most respected citizens.” He was survived by his widow, Elva H., and two sons: Ralph G. and Donald H., both of Vancouver.Instructions for logging waymark: A photograph is required of you (or your GPS receiver, if you are waymarking solo) and the place.
