"Jose Antonio Navarro Houses located at 228-232 S. Laredo Street. Site of home and law office of famed Texas patriot, one of two native-born signers of Texas declaration of Independence. The complex was built about 1850 following Navarro's escape from prison in Mexico after his capture as a member of ill-fated Santa Fe Expedition mounted by the Republic of Texas. Site bought and restored by San Antonio Conservation Society in 1962. Deed to the State of Texas in 1975 as a State Historic Site under direction of Texas Parks and Wildlife. Open to the public.
