DAvid H. Townley lived near the intersection of Springfield Avenue and the Passaic and Delaware Branch of the Lackawanna Rairoad crossing the Passaic Rive and the Gillette town line, Union County, New Jersey The bridge was named after him.
Peter Romano was the flagman or gateman for ten years at this bridge, and he opened and closed the railroad gates at the Townley's Bridge.
There was a sign on the bridge, informing travelers at the time or hours when a flagman or gateman would be on duty, and a picture was taken of this in l9l5
In l925, this rustic road was improved and made with concrete and the wooden bridge was rebuilt too still made of wood, for everyone traveling East and West on this main road.
In l936 the old wooden bridge was replaced by a concrete overpass, making the gateman's job at this crossing a thing of the past.
It is now in 2005 a well traveled main road and it is used by many many people.
