The Amherst Public library, designed by M. O. Wurmser of Lorain, was opened in 1906. The city of Amherst is well-known for its sandstone quarries, making it fitting that the library is built of local stone and displays a large grindstone on the lawn.

The first librarian in the Amherst library, Maude Neiding, held her post for 42 years. She donated land to the city for a park, which was named in her honor.

The library was expanded in 1976. The original library has been renovated and is now home to the local history section.
