According to the NRHP archive: The present day Dansville Library was originally the residence of Joshua Shepard (1780-1829). Shepard build the substantial, neoclassical style home in 1823-24 on lands he had purchased in 1816 when development was first beginning in Genesee County. In 1923 the residence was given by the Shepard family to the community for adaptive reuse as a library. An addition on the south side was designed for that purpose by Claude Bragdon, famous architect, author and theatrical designer who once lived in Dansville.
Beyond the historical and architectural importance of the original residence, the existing library, with its neoclassical wing, demonstrates the versatality of Claude Bragdon as a designer.
